Spare Light

You turned the lamp on halfway bright
Just enough to split the night
And in that shade between your words
I heard the things I never heard
You looked at me, not through, not past
Just long enough to never last
Spare light, soft regret
A quiet we won’t ever get
Still standing where we once were warm
In echoes dimmed but never gone
You gave me half, I took it all
Built up a fire that wouldn’t fall
We glowed a while, then faded clean
But I still live in in-between
